Young slaves live and work in the bowels of a massive, mysterious factory, watched over by cruel robots. They live and die without ever seeing the world outside of their own working rooms, never understanding the nature of the factory or the purpose of their suffering. The work is endless drudgery, and life for the slaves is short and cruel and meaningless. But one day a door opens where no door should be. Some of the slaves escape from their working rooms and find themselves wandering endless corridors. As they band together, they gradually learn the truth about the factory and the world outside its walls, a truth that might throw open every door and set every slave free. But there are dangers in the corridors that are worse than anything they have ever imagined. 1. Language: English. Narrator: R. Paul Matty. Discovering ancient shipwrecks hasn´t been a novelty for thousands of years, but when artifacts were salvaged from a Roman shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera in 1900, the discovery of one set off one of the great mysteries of antiquity. When sponge divers investigated the shipwreck, they found the kinds of items often associated with such discoveries, including marble statues, pottery, jewelry, and coins, but they also discovered a strange object, the likes of which nobody had ever seen before. Initially assumed to be pieces of rock, it turned out that the item, soon to be dubbed the Antikythera mechanism, consisted of dozens of pieces, many of which had gears. In fact, while scholars quickly deduced that it had an astronomical purpose, many believed the mechanism was too advanced to actually date back to antiquity. As it turned out, of course, the Antikythera mechanism did date back to the first or second century BCE, and as scholars began to more fully comprehend its abilities, fascination over the device grew. In conjunction with the determination that the mechanism was an analog computer of sorts that could predict astronomical phenomena like the positions of stars and eclipses, conjecture over the origins of the device led to theories over what the Romans were going to do with it, and whether the device was created by the Greek genius Archimedes himself. To this day, debate continues over whether there were predecessors to the model, where the astronomical observations that went into creating the model were taken, and whether the ultimate origins of the device might even be Babylonian. 1. This is a self-help book for people who don´t usually buy self-help books. Instead of offering cognitive-behavioral techniques for dealing with anger, or affirming strategies to boost self-esteem, this self-help book adapts the basic methods of psychodynamic psychotherapy to a guided course in self-exploration, highlighting the universal role of defense mechanisms in warding off emotional pain. Even the best self-help books tend to stay on the surface. Why Do I Do That? instead probes deeply into the unconscious. With easy-to-understand explanations, the first part teaches you about the unconscious mind and the role of psychological defenses in excluding difficult feelings from awareness. Individual chapters in the longer middle section explore the primary defense mechanisms one by one, with exercises to help you identify your own defenses at work. The final part offers guidance for how to ´´disarm´´ your defenses and cope more effectively with the unconscious feelings behind them. Psychological defense mechanisms are an inevitable and necessary part of the human experience; but when they become too pervasive or deeply entrenched, they may damage our personal relationships, restrict or distort our emotional lives and prevent us from behaving in ways that promote lasting self-esteem. Why Do I Do That? promotes self-help for listeners who want to improve their relationships, manage their emotional lives more effectively and develop authentic self-esteem that will last. If you find that even the best self-help books lack depth and fail to instigate lasting change, this psychodynamic self-help book may be for you. 1. Language: English. Narrator: John Raines. Nearly 2,000 years before Homer wrote his epic poems, the Minoan civilization was centered on the island of Crete, a location that required the Minoans to be a regional sea power. And indeed they were, stretching across the Aegean Sea from about 2700-1500 BCE, with trade routes extending all the way to Egypt. The Minoans may have been the first link in the ´´European chain”, leading to the Ancient Greeks and beyond, but questions persist over the origins of the civilization, the end of the civilization, and substantial parts of their history, including their religion and buildings. All of this is largely because their written language, known today as ´´Linear A”, remains undeciphered, and among the more enigmatic finds of this truly enigmatic culture was a small disk-shaped object excavated among the ruins of the Minoan city of Phaistos in 1908. The disc, which has since become known simply as the ´´Phaistos Disc”, contains a number of pictographic symbols that were unrecognized by the scholars who first laid eyes on the object and remain unknown in the more than 100 years since. The contents of the Phaistos Disc, like the Minoan language of Linear A, remain unclear, but that is not for lack of trying by a plethora of scholars, some more credible than others. Many different theories have been advanced, but there is still no consensus concerning its origins or even if it was intended to be writing.Discovering ancient shipwrecks hasn’t been a novelty for thousands of years, but when artifacts were salvaged from a Roman shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera in 1900, the discovery of one set off one of the great mysteries of antiquity. Many people go through life as a sensitive empath, wondering why they are so misunderstood. They feel as though they have never fit in well with others. They may have psychic abilities, such as clairvoyance, telekinesis, or lucid dreams. They may have difficulties with sensory overload, or may even be diagnosed as having sensory processing disorder. These people are often overwhelmed when they are exposed to noise, fluorescent lights, people, physical touch, or chaotic environments. They may shy away from social interaction, confused on how to interpret and interact with other people. What many of these people don´t realize is that they are indeed special, but not necessarily special education. They are often misconstrued as being naughty, weak, spirited, learning disabled, or stubborn as children. They are difficult to control by the adults around them. They are often punished without understanding really why they are being punished. They might run in front of cars or running away from their parents, often tempting fate. They might even experience near-death experiences or mysterious illnesses that other people cannot seem to diagnose or pinpoint. These children often grow into adulthood, confused about their place in the world. Children who fit these descriptions are often referred to as ´´Indigo children.´´ They are talented, spirited, and special in ways that other children are not. They stick out like a sore thumb because they are not at all like other children. They are extremely unique in how they interact with other and interact with the world. They are often exquisitely sensitive because they have advanced empathy. They are able to see, hear, intuit, and feel things that other children and adults are never able to feel. 1.
